Karthika Puranam Day – 13

కార్తీక పురాణము పదమూడవ (రోజు) అధ్యాయము:

నమశ్శివాభ్యాం నవయౌవనాభ్యాం నమో నమః శంకర పార్వతీభ్యాం.
ఇవాళ్టి పారాయణ అంశాన్ని మనం విందాం.

నిన్నటి రోజున దుర్వాస మహాముని విష్ణు భగవానుని శరణు వేడడం, విష్ణు చక్రాన్ని ఉపసంహరించమని అభయమిచ్చే వరకు విన్నాం.

ఇప్పుడు విష్ణు భగవానుడు దుర్వా  మహామునితో —

“నీ పట్ల అపచారం జరిగిందన్న దృష్టితో అంబరీషుడు విచారంలో ఉన్నాడు. అతను తన రాజపురోహితులతో ధర్మపరిషత్తు ఏర్పాటు చేసి, ఈ అపచారానికి ప్రాయశ్చిత్తం ఎలా చేయాలో ఆలోచిస్తున్నాడు,” అని అన్నాడు.

రాజుగా ఉన్న అంబరీషుడు —
మహర్షులను, మునులను కాపాడడం, గోబ్రాహ్మణ రక్షణ చేయడం తన ప్రధమ కర్తవ్యం అని తెలుసుకున్నాడు. అతని కారణంగా దుర్వాసునికి కీడు కలిగిందని భావించి, తన పాపం తనకే వస్తుందని తపన చెందుతున్నాడు. రాజు దండనీతితో పాలన చేయవచ్చును, కానీ మహర్షుల మీద శిక్ష విధించే అధికారం రాజుకి లేదు,  అది మహర్షులకే చెందుతుంది. అందువల్ల అంబరీషుడు తీవ్రంగా విచారించాడు.

విష్ణు భగవానుడు దుర్వాసునితో ఇలా అన్నాడు —

“ఓ దుర్వాస మహర్షీ! నీవు తక్షణమే అంబరీషుడి దగ్గరికి వెళ్లు. మీ ఇద్దరికీ శుభం జరుగుతుంది.”

దాంతో దుర్వాసుడు వెంటనే బయలుదేరి అంబరీషుడి దగ్గరకు చేరాడు. అతని వెనుక విష్ణు చక్రం కూడా అనుసరించింది. దూర్వాసుడు అంబరీషుడిని చూసి నమస్కరించాడు.
అప్పుడు అంబరీషుడు ముందుకు వచ్చి సుదర్శన చక్రాన్ని ఇలా ప్రార్థించాడు —

“ఓ సుదర్శన చక్రమా! నన్ను మన్నించు. భయంతో ఉన్న మహర్షిని ఇలాగే హింసించడం న్యాయం కాదు. నీవు విష్ణు ఆయుధమవు, నాకు దైవస్వరూపము. అయినప్పటికీ ఈ మహర్షిని రక్షించటానికి నిన్ను ఎదిరించక తప్పదు. నిన్ను జయించగలది ఈ లోకంలో ఏదీ లేదని నాకు తెలుసు. అయినా నా బలం రుచి చూడు. శరణాగతుడైన దూర్వాసుని వదిలి వేయి, లేకుంటే నిన్ను నేలకూలుస్తాను!”

అప్పుడు సుదర్శన చక్రం రూపధారణ చేసి పలికింది —

“అంబరీషా! నాతో యుద్ధం అంటే సంబరమా? మధు–కైటభుల వంటి రాక్షసులను నేను సంహరించాను. దేవతలకే భయంకరుడినైన బ్రహ్మ, రుద్రులకూ భయంకరుడినైన
దుర్వాసుడే నా ప్రతాపం వలన ధీనుడయ్యాడు. నీతో యుద్ధం అవసరమా?”

అప్పటికీ అంబరీషుడు సమాధానమిచ్చాడు —

“నీవు నా దైవమైన హరి ఆయుధమవు కాబట్టి ఇంతవరకు నిన్ను తట్టుకున్నాను. ఋషులు, తపస్వులు, స్త్రీలు, శిశువులు, గో బ్రాహ్మణులపై నేను బాణం ఎక్కించను. కానీ నీవు దివ్య రూపం విడిచి ఋషిరూపంలో వస్తే, ధర్మబద్ధంగా యుద్ధం చేస్తాను.”

దాంతో సుదర్శనుడు నవ్వుతూ అన్నాడు —

“రాజా! నేను నీ సంరక్షణ నిమిత్తమే వచ్చాను, యుద్ధానికి కాదు. నీ భక్తిని పరీక్షించడానికే మాటాడాను. విష్ణు భక్తులతో నేను విరోధం పెట్టను. నీ కోరిక ప్రకారమే దుర్వాసుని వదిలేస్తాను.” అని చెప్పి అంబరీషుడిని ఆలింగనం చేసుకున్నాడు.

అంబరీషుడు ఆనందభరితుడై ఇలా అన్నాడు —

“సుదర్శనా! నీతో యుద్ధానికి దిగినందుకు క్షమించు. నీకు నా సాష్టాంగ నమస్కారాలు.
భక్తులను రక్షించడంలో, రాక్షసులను సంహరించడంలో నీకు విష్ణు తుల్యమైన ప్రకాశం ఉంది.” సంతోషించిన సుదర్శనుడు అంబరీషుడిని దీవించి అదృశ్యమయ్యాడు.

ఫలశ్రుతి:

కలియుగంలో కార్తీకమాసంలో ఈ అధ్యాయాన్ని ఒక్కసారైనా చదివినవారు లేదా విన్నవారు
అనేక భోగాలను అనుభవించి చివరికి ఉత్తమ గతి పొందుతారని స్కాంద పురాణం — కార్తీక మహాత్మ్యం (27 & 28 అధ్యాయాలు) చెబుతున్నాయి.

తదుపరి (14వ రోజు) సూచన:

రేపు ఉసిరి తినకూడదు (నిషేధం).
దానం చేయదలచిన వారు — నువ్వులు, ఇనుము లేదా గేదె దానం చేయాలి.
పూజించాల్సిన దైవం — యమధర్మరాజు.
దాంతో మృత్యుభయం తొలగిపోతుంది.

Karthika Puranam – Day 13:

Namashshivabhyam Navayauvanabhyam Namo Namah Shankara Parvatibhyam

Yesterday, we heard about how Sage Dūrvāsa sought refuge in Lord Viṣṇu, and how the Lord granted him protection and promised to withdraw His discus (Sudarśana Chakra).

Now, Lord Viṣṇu, understanding that King Ambarīṣa was deeply troubled because he had unknowingly offended the sage, spoke gently to Dūrvāsa Muni:
“O Sage, King Ambarīṣa is filled with remorse for the offense caused to you. He has assembled his royal priests and scholars to form a Dharma Parishad (Council of Righteousness) to determine how to atone for this sin.

As a ruler, he knows his foremost duty is to protect sages, ascetics, cows, and Brahmins. Since you, a great sage, suffered on his account, he is grieving deeply. A king must rule with justice and discipline, but he has no right to punish sages or saints; only other sages may do so. If a king ever kills or harms a sage, he incurs the gravest sin. Likewise, even if someone is harmed unintentionally for his sake, the sin falls upon him.

Understanding this sacred law, King Ambarīṣa is tormented with guilt because the Viṣṇu Chakra was released on your account. Therefore, go to him immediately; reconciliation will bring well-being to you both.”

Hearing Lord Viṣṇu’s advice, Sage Dūrvāsa immediately set forth, and the Sudarśana Chakra followed behind him. Upon reaching Ambarīṣa, Dūrvāsa bowed before the king.

Seeing the Chakra approaching the frightened sage, Ambarīṣa stepped forward and said:
“O Sudarśana Chakra! Forgive me. It is unjust to torment this terrified sage, for he has now sought refuge. You are divine, a manifestation of Lord Viṣṇu Himself, and so I revere you. Still, to protect this sage, I must face you — though I know nothing in this world can overpower you. Nevertheless, test my strength and courage once. Leave this refuge-seeking sage unharmed, or else I will fight you to the end!”

Sudarśana Chakra, admiring the king’s righteousness, spoke:
“O Ambarīṣa! You seem eager to fight me — perhaps you think it would be glorious! But remember, I have destroyed countless demons like Madhu and Kaiṭabha who were invincible even to the gods. The entire world trembles before those who anger me — even mighty beings like Brahmā and Rudra fear my radiance.

If such a brilliant sage as Dūrvāsa trembles before me, what can a mere human king, driven by Kṣatriya pride, do to me? A wise ruler seeks peace with the powerful, not destruction through battle. I have tolerated you only because you are a devotee of Lord Viṣṇu. Don’t lose your life in vain pride!”

These words enraged Ambarīṣa.
“Sudarśana! Because you are the divine weapon of my Lord Hari, I have endured your insults. Otherwise, I would have shattered you with my arrows! I never harm sages, ascetics, Brahmins, women, children, or cows — but if you were not divine, you would have known the taste of my arrows! If you wish to fight, take on the form of a sage, a mortal form, and then I shall battle you in accordance with Dharma! For I will not attack the divine,” he said boldly.

Moved by Ambarīṣa’s valor and righteousness, Sudarśana manifested in human form, smiled, and said:
“O noble king, Lord Hari sent me only to protect you, not to fight you! I merely tested your steadfastness in Dharma. I never oppose the devotees of Viṣṇu. Since you desire it, I will release Sage Dūrvāsa now.”

He then embraced Ambarīṣa warmly.

Ambarīṣa, overjoyed, bowed and said:
“O Sudarśana, forgive me for raising arms against you. Your brilliance is equal to that of Lord Viṣṇu Himself, both in protecting devotees and in destroying the wicked. Accept my humble salutations!”

Blessing the king, Sudarśana vanished.

Phala Śruti (Fruit of Reading)

In the Skanda Purāṇa, under Kārthika Māhātmya (Chapters 27 & 28), it is said that whoever reads or hears this story, even once during Kārthika month, will enjoy great prosperity and attain liberation after death.

This is the 13th day’s reading.
On the 14th day (tomorrow), it is advised to avoid eating amla (Indian gooseberry). Those performing charity should donate sesame seeds, iron, or a cow, and worship Yama Dharmarāja, the Lord of Justice. This worship is said to remove untimely death and ensure longevity.
